Tips to keep kids' teeth healthy

February is National Children's Dental Health Month and being parents of a 3-year-old toddler we thought we would share some dental healthcare tips for children.

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?
In order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.  If there are older children in the family, it is sometimes helpful to have the toddler come with the older sibling and watch them sit ...

Cupid's Garland

Materials:

  • Red construction paper
  • Paper doilies
  • Red and white felt
  • Tacky glue and glitter glue
  • Glittery heart-shaped stickers

Steps:

  • Fold a long sheet of construction paper like an accordion and cut out a heart shape with a tab on the fold side. (The tab is where the hearts will connect.)
  • Cut heart shapes out of the felt and glue them to the doilies.
  • Glue the doilies to the heart garland and decorate using the glitter glue and stickers. Allow to dry.

Over 60 tons of manufactured snow will transform the west side of Brand Park into a winter setting! Children are invited to play in active and passive snow areas. Plastic discs are provided for the downhill snow slides. Community display booths, “hands-on-activities,” and refreshments will be available. An adult must accompany all children. Hosted by Jamie Shaheen, this Musical Circus will allow kids to learn more about the piano and become more familiar with its versatility and unique sound. The theme of the show will reflect the Pasadena Symphony’s upcoming concert, Mozart 40, featuring acclaimed pianist, Robert Thies.  The Pasadena Symphony Association’s Musical Circus is a perennial favorite for children 3-8 years of age. The Circus will begin with the instrument “petting zoo” where youngsters can toot flutes, blow trumpets, pluck violins and cellos and bang on percussion instruments.

The LA County Arboretum is a unique 127 acre botanical garden and historical site and is home to plant collections from all over the world, including many rare and endangered species, The Arboretum also houses outdoor historical landmarks representative of the major phases of California history. No tram on this day, but the gardens are a great place for stroller walks and for toddlers, the duck pond is always a big hit! You can bring a picnic  or grab some lunch or snack at the Peacock Cafe (open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tue. to Sun.).

Cavalia is an innovative mulitmedia extravaganza that pays homage to the poignant history and facinating bond between human being and horses. Blending dramatic visual effects, live music, dance and acrobatics, the show features 50 magnificent horses and 32 artists from one of the co-founders of Cirque du Solei. MAC KID TIP, from a mom who saw the show: Show pacing is not frenetic, which is refreshing. Stadium-style, steep seating where most views are decent and higher seats may be better. I appreciated the artistry (stage design/projected imagery) and performance was Cirque du Soleil-similar. Show is 2.5 hours.

Free public star parties are held monthly with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers. They are a chance for the whole family to look at the sun, moon, visible planets, and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment.  Please be aware that the astronomers and telescope demonstrators must cut off the line for each telescope to enable all viewing to be completed by 9:45 p.m. Hours for telescope operation are not the same as for the building (which closes at 10:00 p.m.).

Sierra Madre Public Library’s new five-week Parent/Child Workshop for families with children ages three and younger will feature noted resource professionals from the community. Each workshop session will feature a different aspect of parenting, including early literacy, speech, hearing and language development, child development, nutrition, music, play, and health. The workshops, which will take place at the Library on consecutive Wednesdays: March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 will be interactive and will include toys, crafts, books and play in addition to discussions of parenting issues and concerns.

"Love potion" jars - craft for preschoolers

What you need:
  • Small jars
  • Red and pink candy
  • Felt and rickrack
  • Paper doilies
  • Tacky glue and glitter glue

Steps:

  • Fill a jar with candy.
  • Cut out a white piece of felt to fit the side of the jar. Then cut a heart out of the red felt. Glue the white piece onto the jar, and then glue the heart on top. Decorate with glitter glue and allow to dry.
