Autism Awareness Month

April 2nd marks the 4th annual celebration of World Autism Awareness Day and officially kicks off Autism Awareness Month.
 
The Empire State Building in New York City and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada will turn their lights blue to raise awareness for autism and to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day.  Many all over the world will also show respect and promote awareness to Autism by wearing blue.

Friday, March 25 - Japanese Cultural Night @ Memorial Park in Sierra Madre

Drop by the park and enjoy reasonably priced sushi, ramen noodles, fried rice and dumplings prepared by Happy Cup Ramen Truck. The American Red Cross will be on location for those who wish to contribute to the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster relief effort. We hope that this event is an opportunity to bring our community together in a meaningful way. Sierra Madre Mayor Joe Mosca will formally welcome the event’s special guest, the Honorable Junichi Ihara, Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles. A classical Japanese Taiko drumming performance will follow by the acclaimed Hiroyuki Hayashida Taiko Trio.

Saturday, March 26 - Altadena Music & Arts Community Festival

Bring the whole family up and enjoy a FREE day of fun entertainment. Bring a picnic and b.b.q up at the park! Enjoy music all day along with arts and crafts, dancing, yoga, face painting, puppets and an all around good time! This event is on rain or shine! We have a beautiful indoor stage in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Vendors will be selling crafts, artwork, T-shirts, plants, etc. Food vendors will be available, but families are encouraged to come out and picnic or grill for an afternoon at the park.  Bands and entertainment will go on throughout the event. Performers include such local favorites as HB3, the Sundowners, Gwendolyn, & many others.

Visit the Busy Bee Learning Store to purchase live caterpillars for this Kidspace tradition. Then raise your Caterpillar Calcaterpillars from pupa to chrysalis, and finally into beautiful butterflies by following the directions included with your butterfly adoption kit.  MACARONI TIP: This is a fun annual tradition for kids of all ages. You can make a butterfly home out of a milk carton and watch the caterpillar grow to a butterfly.

The City of South Pasadena is hosting its third annual "Doggy Day with Cats too" event along the . Families and 4-legged friends will enjoy a variety of FREE activities featuring attractions such as a blessing of the animals, Doga demonstrations, animal communicators, arts and crafts, a costume contest, a march around Garfield Park led by the local Girl Scouts Troop 9491 and live music. It is a perfect opportunity to find out about the myriad of unique dog and cat resources in the community and surrounding areas. Adoption and rescue agencies, groomers, dog trainers, day care providers, veterinarians and merchandise providers will be on site at the event.

Scientists have put a roach in the driver's seat of an electric powered vehicle and sent it around their laboratory in this Weird Connections production. This bizarre experiment is no joke. This stunning high-definition movie will serve as the springboard for a lively discussion about the science behind the beauty and wonder of nature. Macaroni Tip: This is a great way to introduce young children to art museums. My children (ages 4 & 6) love this program because they get to walk around the museum with a museum educator and ask questions and talk about what they see. The program is led by a Norton Simon Museum staff member, and following the guide around the museum, you get to do a simple craft. Travel deep into exotic jungles of the world and listen to stories of extraordinary animals and bizarre insects while drawing your own imaginary creatures in front of Henri Rousseau’s Exotic Landscape, 1910.

Kids' workshops are free "How-to" workshops that teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates' aprons, and an achievement pin. The Santa Anita Food Truck Festival is back, and is going to be BIGGER and BETTER than the first. Enjoy gourmet food from 80 of Southern California’s finest gourmet food trucks including The Grilled Cheese Truck and the Lobsta Truck. Food trucks and foodies everywhere will take over the ENTIRE Santa Anita Infield. This time around, we are making it bigger AND better! The event will be held in the vast Santa Anita Park Infield, in the middle of the race track. Our first Food Truck Festival was located in the east end of the Infield, but this time, the Food Truck Festival will occupy the entire Infield.

The Lineage Dance Company will be on-site to perform ballet that originated in Europe. Preceding the show, Lineage Dance will offer a small workshop in the central court designed to teach children a few simple ballet movements.  The Lineage Dance Company’s performance starts at 6:30 p.m.  Join us in the climbing towers as we create dancing sculptures with clay from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.  All performances are made possible by the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division Grant.

Free public star parties are held monthly with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers. They are a chance for the whole family to look at the sun, moon, visible planets, and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment.  Please be aware that the astronomers and telescope demonstrators must cut off the line for each telescope to enable all viewing to be completed by 9:45 p.m. Hours for telescope operation are not the same as for the building (which closes at 10:00 p.m.).

Fresh Fruit Salsa


A light snack kids will love

This is my own version of something I have tried at a Pampered Chef party. The key here is to use fruit of any kind. Use what you have around the house. I do not suggest using bananas, however. If you try to save the salsa for leftovers, bananas don't look pretty the next day.

Choose four or five different colored fruits like strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, mandarin oranges, grapes, apples, etc.
