Publisher's Note: Rub a Dub Dub...Fun in the Tub

- It's Bath Safety Month

By Faith Mellinger, Editor/Co-Publisher January 22, 2015
I'm a busy mom - it's tempting to stick the kids in the tub and start putting away the laundry or sweep up the mess they've made while their contained to one spot. However this can be a really bad idea. We usually think of water safety in the summer - but bathtub accidents injure around 43,000 US Kids each year.

January is bathtub safety month so I thought this week would be a great time to offer five great tips to keep the fun in the tub.

Stay with them: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children 4 and under always have an adult present when they are near water - including the tub! Children can drown in less than an inch of water.

Test the Temperature: I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "mommy it's too hot!" My kids love to sit in the tub as it fills up, but the temperature can change. Set your home's water heater to deliver water no hotter than 120 degrees to lower the risk of scalding. it's also a good idea to keep one of those water temperature thermometers handy.

Beware of sharp edges: Use a rubber cover for the faucet head and drape a towel over metal rails for shower doors when your child is in the bath. Make sure any glass in the bathroom is made of shatterproof glass and avoid bath toys with points or hard edges that could be hazardous is someone falls on them.

Prevent Slips: Affix a slip-resistant plastic mat that suctions to the bottom of the tub and make sure the throw rug outside the tub does not slide when stepped on. Make sure you monitor the play - my boys love to jump even in the bath and one little slip could be deadly.

Don't overfill the tub: Babies only need an inch or two of water and older kids shouldn't have a tub filled above waist height. Also make sure there aren't any obstacles (shower curtains, etc.) that obscure your full view of the tub.

Our bath time is a great transition from day-time to bed-time and the kids have a lot of fun with their bath toys. It's always a good reminder to remember it can also be a danger zone for kids if you aren't paying attention. Keep it safe - keep it fun!
