Publisher's Note: Game On!

By Faith Mellinger, Editor/Co-Publisher January 29, 2015
It's National Puzzle Day, nearing Super Bowl weekend and many spring sports are gearing up to start the season...it's game time.

I was thinking this morning about how we are all working too hard. As parents we are running our households, keeping up with relatives, maintaining relationships with friends, volunteering our time, working and so much more. With flexible schedules, cell phones and email many of us are working all the time. We stay up til 11 p.m. answering emails so that we can be there to pick up our kids from school at 3 p.m. We all deserve a little play time so I interrupt this Publisher's message for a game of hide-and-seek.

Okay I was found...and now as I am back to writing this article my 3-year-old is rolling a lego fire engine around my chair going on a "pretend call." I love that I can work my schedule around my kids, but sometimes I'm working just a little too much and it's important to take those breaks to just be present for the fun times.

We recently had a family bowling afternoon at Bowlmor in Pasadena and it was a blast. The kids made it through one game of bowling but it was a great family activity and everyone is ready to go back for round two. We also got a ton of board games for the holidays so we've held a few family game nights ourselves. One three hour round of Monopoly even called for an intermission before my 5-year-old and I took over the game winning it all. I think these little interruptions to my to-do list are just as important to me as the kids. Sometimes it's nice to just play and not have to "get stuff done."

This weekend many local museums are offering free admission - so get out and explore. We are also giving away some pretty awesome California themed flash cards so be sure to enter to win!

Our calendar is full of fun for everyone - from teen scene events to classes for expectant parents- be sure to tell us if you see something we missed (or if you know an event was cancelled...sometimes we aren't always the first to know). The amazing Joyce Sakonju at joyces@macaronikid.com loves to get events to post on the calendar.

Enjoy!

We make every effort to ensure that the events we list have the most up to date information but things change, so please call ahead. We do not personally check out each event, and a listing in the calendar does not constitute an endorsement of the event!
