Upcycled Birdhouse!

Turning a Used Coffee Traveler Box into a Lovely New Home for a Family of Birds

Having a birdhouse near your home is great fun because it encourages birds to nest and frequent your yard. We made this one at no actual cost, since I had all the materials in my garage and craft drawer anyway.

Birds need their homes to be protected by predators, so camouflage colors are helpful and the size of the entry hole is important.

Supplies:
  • coffee traveler box
  • 2 extra pieces or cardboard (6in x 7in for bottom and 7in x 9.25in for back)
  • scissors
  • duct tape
  • sturdy wire (approx. 18 to 32 inches)
  • awl or something to poke holes with
  • brown and / or green paper
  • optional: small pieces of wood veneer
  • varnish (clear interior / exterior)
  • small wooden stick, such as a popsicle stick

Instructions:
1.   Start by opening the coffee traveler box and removing the inner bag that contained the coffee.  The box itself is actually very well sized, with a good size hole just in the right place for a birdhouse.
2.   Poke 2 holes in the back and thread a thick piece of wire through them.  Loop the wire around twice and twist to secure.
3.   Add an extra piece of sturdy cardboard to the inside of the back and the bottom.
4.   Close the box and seal it with duct tape.
5.   Cover the box with varnish and brown void-fill paper.  Varnish over the top and let dry.
6.   Using the varnish like decoupage, use natural-colored papers to cover the   box.  If available, use thin pieces of wood veneer, too.
7.   Add a simple perch at the opening by duct-taping a popsicle stick in the hole and then covering the tape with a scrap of paper and varnish.
8.   Allow the varnish to dry fully and any odor to dissipate before hanging up for your birds.
