The 2024 World Series was the twelfth time the Dodgers and Yankees have been matched up for the championship.Though this is the most frequent World Series pairing in baseball history, it’s not the only thing that furthers their rivalry.   Nearly half - five of those eleven past match ups – went 6 or 7 games before reaching a 4-game win.   This year marks the Dodger’s fifth World Series win over the Dodgers.


In June of 2023, a game between the Blue Jays and Red Sox was suspended because for rain and scheduled to resume in August of the same season.  Catcher Danny Jansen was traded from the Sox to the Blue Jays in July, however, and when the teams resumed play, Jansen became the only player to ever play for two different teams in the same game! 

The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships in all, making them the most successful in the MLB.  The second most successful team (the St. Louis Cardinals) trails significantly at 11 World Series wins and the Dodgers come in at just 8 in the 120-year history


The Boston Braves carry records for both the longest and shortest baseball games in MLB history.  The longest single regular season game (against the Brooklyn Robins) was in 1920 and went 26 innings!  The shortest complete game was in 1944 when Charley "Red" Barrett pitched a complete-game shutout against the Cincinnati Reds. The game lasted only 58 pitches and 75 minutes.


The Yankees played the longest World Series game ever in 1960 at 6 hours and 23 minutes.They finally ceded to the Pirates after 12 innings.  

A bald eagle who was brought in for the pre-game ceremony of an April 2018 game between the Mariners and the Twins had an unexpected moment of confusion, landing square on the shoulder of Pitcher James Paxton. Fortunately, both Paxton and the eagle remained calm.


Just two years later in 1962, the Yanks struggled in the World Series again, this time with the worst ever World Series performance, losing to the Giants in just 4 games with a combined total score of 40 to 21.
Oracle Park, the Giants’ home field in San Francisco, sports one of the highest outfield walls in the MLB at 25 feet.Though over 100 left-handed batters have hit home runs up the steep angle, over the wall and into the bay, it took 24 years until Heliot Ramos the first right-hander to ever accomplish a “Splash Hit” in September of this year.  


In the 1963 World Series, the Dodgers again made pitching history when Sandy Koufax delivered two complete-game shutouts, striking out 23 Yankees throughout the series.

The Rockies’ Randy Johnson accidentally demonstrated the power of his fastball in 2001, when a bird happened to fly between Johnson and the batter at just the same moment of the pitch.  Tragically, poor bird was struck and completely obliterated by the pitch.


The Brooklyn Dodgers’ Don Larson pitched a perfect game in game 5 of the 1956 World Series, the only time it’s ever been accomplished under World Serries pressure.  The MLB has seen just 24 perfectly pitched games in all of recorded baseball history.

In 2004, the Red Sox overcame a 3-0 deficit in the American League Championship Series, breaking the Sox 86-year championship drought known as the "Curse of the Bambino" and going on to defeat the Cardinals in the World Series.

Dodgers’ fans are proud of MVP Freddie Freeman’s accomplishments this year. He set a new record for the longest streak of home runs in consecutive World Series games with a whopping 6 homers! He also became the first player to hit home runs in each of the first four games of a World Series.
2024 also saw the first time when two players (Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani) having each accomplished a 50-home-run record in the same regular season have then faced each other in a World Series.
