Locals Tell Us Their Favorite Reads

March 1, 2012

We've gathered a few recommendations for your bookshelves from a few of our local friends:

Shayna at Diggin for Daisies recommends "An Environmental Guide from A to Z"  by Tim Magner - By examining the elements, habitats and cycles in nature, An Environmental Guide reveals how the world works from A to Z.

Robin Starkey Harpster, Marriage and Family Therapist at the Institute for Girls’ Development thinks  "Does this Pregnancy Make Me Look Fat?" By Claire Mysko and Magali Amadei is a must read for every new and expecting mother; and parents of kids big and small should keep a copy of "The Whole Brain Child," by Dr. Daniel Segal and Dr. Tina Bryson at the ready at all times.

Laura Agakanian, owner of Bellies, Babies & Bosoms thinks "The Sleepeasy Solution: The Exhausted Parent's Guide to Getting Your Child to Sleep from Birth to Age 5"  by Jennifer Waldburger and Jill Spivack is a must on every new parents bedside table.

Marah Lyvers, Camp Director at Tom Sawyer Camps, believes "Nurture Shock" by Ashley Marriman and Po Bronson which takes a good look at the empirical research about kids and their development and compares our societal parenting habits and is a must read! She doesn't stop there, also on her reading list is "Last Child in The Woods" by Richard Louv, an incredible challenge to us as a society...talking about how our children are no longer allowed or encouraged to spend time in nature, thus short changing our children and our whole culture's ability to connect to ourselves and "Raising Happiness" by Dr. Christine Carter which discusses how we raise kids who have a growth mindset...not a fixed one! Marah found this to be incredibly helpful, even to non-parents!
