Worth The Drive: Mother's Beach

Long Beach's Hidden Water, Sand and Playground

By Faith Mellinger May 9, 2013
Some of my favorite childhood memories are the beach trips we took with my mom to Mother's Beach in Long Beach. Now as a mother myself, this somewhat hidden spot where the waves are calm, the water shallow and bathrooms and a playground are close by is a family favorite.

Since my mom lives in Long Beach we ventured out last weekend for a trip with grandma. If you arrive at the right time parking is easy - there is a metered parking lot (so bring your quarters) or you can sometimes find FREE street parking (a rarity in the beach cities). I usually opt for the parking lot because it's closer to our destination and when I have three kids and beach gear to haul I value those few less steps to the sand. There are also usually lifeguards on duty.

In addition to the water and sand this ocean destination features a recently updated playground and decent (it's still the public beach after all) bathrooms. There is also grass and shady trees, this is especially appreciated during the hot months when you need a break from the sun. During our trip we also noticed a new restaurant had opened right along the water so we'll have to try that out next time.

If you have small children it's definitely worth a visit. You can find the beach here:
