Party for the Planet at the LA ZOO April 18 & 19, 2015, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens takes part in the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day by hosting PARTY FOR THE PLANET: AN EARTH DAY CELEBRATION providing guests with information and ideas about animal conservation and preservation, sustainable living for humans, recycling and how to make Earth a better place to live.

Among the opportunities to explore and learn are a California condor station which illustrates the Zoo’s critical efforts to bring the largest bird in North America back from the brink of extinction and how we can help by cleaning up microtrash; a "Backyard Safari," where visitors discover the range of critters living in their own backyards; an opportunity to get up close to a desert tortoise, California's state reptile, and an interactive puzzle explaining how it has survived for so long as well as what challenges it faces today; "Plant It and They Will Come," showing how to plant native vegetation that encourages native wildlife; an interactive diorama by Enviroscape, which explains what happens to water, fluids, or chemicals we dump on the ground and where they end up as they travel from homes to the ocean; and a Bat Station, which highlights the different species of bats that visit the zoo.  Other "discovery" stations spotlight exceptional survival adaptations by asking guests to compare their own abilities and senses to those of animals.  For example, how does an American black bear’s sense of smell, which is seven times greater than a bloodhound’s, match up to a human’s?  And what kind of adaptations would humans need in order to succeed in the big-horn sheep’s rocky environment?  Adding to the mix are tips from local vendors and government organizations on how to treat the earth with kindness.

Earth Day Happening @ Corita Art Center (campus of Immaculate Heart High School)

It's going to be well...happening.
Corita's festive, participatory, highly-choreographed “Happenings” succeeded in breaking down barriers, encouraging creativity, and fostering a sense of community. In honor of Earth Day, the Corita Art Center presents a Corita-style “Happening” warm-up—followed by an earth-centric art lesson by former student, artist, and master teacher, Laurine DiRocco, hosted on the very grounds where Corita taught. Recommended for ages 6 and up!
